Sessions Surf DVD by Tim Bonython

Tim Bonython has made a lot of films over the years. But for the last three he has been hard at work piecing together his definitive documentary called What is Surfing.

In that time Tim has shot an impressive list of memorable Sessions that have stayed in the can until this moment.

SESSIONS brings many highlights in those three years one of the main ones being 2008 Theaupo'o April Massive swell and the 2008 Backdoor Shootout where the Hui ran the best event in 5 years. 3 days of perfect 6 to15 foot Pipe & Backdoor.

We also look at some of the better moments of of the 2007 / 2008 North Shore season which included the moment where it was too big to run the Eddie, but Garrett McNamara decided to prove them wrong.

Then there was the ultimate Superbank shot May 2007 - with floorless perfection.

Shipsterns Bluff in Tasmania for one of the biggest sessions filmed there. Tim went back in April 08 & scored again - so we through that in.

Surfline voted the Three Days @ OURS session the best of the year - we show you a whole new edit featuring the infamous Bra Boys doing what they do best.

Finishing with a bang we go to Tahiti - Teahupo'o for the ever so documented Halloween Swell - the session that shook the world - shot last November.

Plus as a bonus segment we head to WA last April & look at Sessions shot at Nth Point & Super Tubes.

When Matt Archbold started surfing back in 1979 at age 11 the world had no idea that it was about to witness one of the most explosive surfers to ever set foot on a surfboard. With a career spanning nearly 3 decades now, Archy is considered to be the most successful free surfer of all time and one of the originators of high performance surfing. As Martin Potter was setting the stage globally for high performance surfing in the early 80’s, a young crew out of San Clemente led by Archy was about to blow the roof off of surfing.
From dropping out of high school as a freshman at 15 and turning pro, to becoming the poster child of surf clothing giant MCD, Archy’s young life was no dull moment. After he struggled with competitive surfing for the next 5 years, and having some success winning a handful of Bud Tour events, Archy quickly learns pro surfing’s 3 turns to the beach format isn’t for him. He then decides to set out on a fairly new frontier, “free surfing” getting paid to simply go out and get photo’s, something that had not been done up until then. In his early 20’s, his name became synonymous with the legendary surf spot known as “Off The Wall” all the while riding shorter boards in bigger surf something that most had never done or dreamed of doing. Archy’s Ariel attack in the water and explosive surfing revolutionized what we view as high performance surfing today.

MAY DAYZ is where we witness local Tahitian surfer Raimana Von Bastolear almost get decapitated by an out of control jet ski. An image that was beamed around the world and in this film we see piece by piece how it actually all went down.

Next up is TEAHUPO’O 9/11 where Hawaiian big wave charger Shane Dorian catches the wave of his life! ! See a wave with a barrel big enough to share tow legends – Garett McNamara and the late great Tahitian local Malik Joyeux.

In SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY the king of Teahupo’o Manoa Drollet dominates in the wave of the year, arguably the biggest wave ever surfer there. See film maker Larry Haynes get pitched in a horrific moment of madness and GARRETT McNamara wipe out on the following wave, get dragged across the reef and survive.

Finally we have AS GOOD AS IT GETS – Veta “Poto”David get cheese grated on the wave that has made him so famous; Laird pulls into a crazy wave similar to his famous Millennium wave;

and to top it off drop in on last year's Christmas swell where Teahupo’o lit up to the most perfect waves ever surfer there.
